Temporary workaround for Grub2 Linux: BadRAM filtering

For Unix-based distributions that use GRUB2 as a bootloader, BadRAM filtering can be used to exclude known defective memory addreses from being used by the operating system. This temporary workaround can be applied as follows:

  1. Copy & paste the following faulty memory ranges to /etc/default/grub:
  2. GRUB_BADRAM="0x0000005729A5000,0xFFFFFFFFFFFFF000,0x000000211CC1000,0xFFFFFFFFFFFFF000"
  3. Open and terminal and run the following command
  4. sudo update-grub
Warning: Masking faulty memory addresses does not fix defective RAM, but provides a temporary workaround for allowing the system to boot. Please consult the FAQ for more details
Temporary workaround for Windows: badmemorylist filtering in BCD store

For Windows Vista and later, the Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store can be used to exclude physical page frames (PFN) from being used by the operating system. This temporary workaround can be applied as follows:

  1. Open the Command Prompt (as Adminstrator) either from Windows or System Recovery options
  2. Run the following command to enable memory blacklisting:
  3. bcdedit /set {badmemory} badmemoryaccess no
  4. Run the following command to blacklist the faulty page frame numbers (PFN):
  5. bcdedit /set {badmemory} badmemorylist 0x5729A5 0x211CC1
Warning: Masking faulty memory addresses does not fix defective RAM, but provides a temporary workaround for allowing the system to boot. Please consult the FAQ for more details
